| Dear Sir or Madam, Our home is on the Inidian river which is brackish. We do get some salt from the ever present prevailing winds from the east. Our front lawn is completely shaded with the exception of a small a area directly in front of the front porch. Consequently plants that are shade loving will not grow on the southern exposure and sun loving plants will not grow on the northern exposure of the area directly in front of the porch. Help. Additionally, very few blooming plants can withstand the shade. I'd like to plant something under the live oaks that will at least give the illusion of color. Azaleas will not grow on this property. (possibly due to the salt) Currently I have ferns under the oaks - I thought maybe hostas (don't know if they'd survive the salt) or perhaps a low growing ground cover. Appreciate any tips. | Kathy, I would suggest you try Caladiums (moderate salt tolerance), Persian Shield (Strobilanthus), and Setcreasea (Purple Heart). In the sun Trailing Lantana (Lantana montevidensis), Begonia, Calendula, Dusty Miller, Petunia, Gaillardia, Snapdragon, Gazania, Kale (Ornamental), Zinnia and Purslane. Thanks for the question.
