| Red banana plants should grow well in full sunshine in the San Fernando Valley. I think what you're witnessing is a natural reaction of the foliage to too much sunshine. The plants were grown with afternoon shade and are typically kept in afternoon shade in nursery situations to keep them from dehydrating too quickly. (It's expensive to have to keep watering plants so reducing the amount of sunshine they receive reduces the amount of evaporation from the soil.) Once transported from the nursery where they developed the leaves they currently have with reduced amounts of sunshine, it is normal for the leaves to become scalded from hot afternoon sun. As the plants grow in their sunnier spots, the leaves they develop will be more sun-tolerant and the sunburn or sunscald. Hope this information is helpful! |
