The arch holding our clemtis has broken. We wish to replace with a trellis. How do we do this without losing our plant?

There are two ways you could try to do this. One is to cut apart the old arch and keep the plant intact, then tie the plant to the new trellis -- trying to keep it facing the same way as before. The other method would be to cut back the clematis by about half, extract it as best you can from the arch, and then lean it against the trellis (set it so the wind blows it toward the trellis) and let it find its own way. I don't think it would kill the plant even if you cut it back quite short. If you can avoid digging near the roots when you install the new trellis, that would be best. Good luck with your project!
