The Q&A Archives: Transplanting Ferns

Question: I have a large group of ferns that were in a partially shady area. We took down some trees and now they are in full sun and not doing too well. Can I transplant them to a shady area and if so how and when?
Thank you.

Answer: I'd move the ferns now before the summer sunshine does them all in! Since they're going to a shady spot where you can keep the soil moist, go ahead and transplant them now. Expect them to spend the next few weeks becoming established in their new homes. When the begin to put out new growth, trim away the damaged fronds.

Best wishes with your ferns!
