| what can I plant over my large allium so that when they die back I have something other than dirt to look at. The area that they are in is a rock garden at the front of the house. It is my country house in the mountains 5A, also lots of deer etc. It is mostly sunny, moist. Poor soil. |
| With deer, the choices become limited. Chives come to mind as a possibility, they are related to the giant allium so should also grow well there, and deer do not eat them. Chives will rebloom if cut back after each bloom flush -- and the cutting back will prevent them from seeding about. You might also try a groundcover such as ajuga which will grow nicely in the sun if the soil is somewhat moist. The alliums should have no trouble coming up through ajuga and it is easy to control from spreading beyond its intended area. Perennial cranesbill might be another option. Your local professional nursery staff may also have suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the growing conditions where your alliums are and your overall design goals.
