The Q&A Archives: Hybrid Poplar trees

Question: Will putting red cinders near my poplars hurt or kill them?

Answer: No, but with any product used for mulch, keep it several inches away from the trunk or stem. Otherwise, it can rub against the bark, or create a wet environment that is conducive to the spread of disease. Poplar are heavy water users so some type of mulch to help maintain soil moisture and reduce soil temperatures in summer is helpful.
