The Q&A Archives: Spent flowers on Clethera bushes

Question: Is it necessary to remove spent flowers from Clethora and Spirea bushes?

Answer: It is not necessary to remove the spent flowers on Clethra or Spirea. Some gardeners will do it because they prefer the look, but you don't have to do it.

However, with the summer blooming spireas such as S. japonica, a light shearing to remove the faded blooms usually helps encourage additional flowering.
