We are wanting to plant a tree in memory of a friend of ours that past away. Is there any good trees to plant in August for Zone 7 (this is the time in which all of us friends will be together to do this)? This tree will be on a university campus. August aside...is there a particular tree in general that you recommend for this zone, on a campus, that is a good selection as a

You can plant in August, as long as you water on a regular basis so the roots of your new tree can become established. Usually one deep soaking each week will be all that's needed. Here are a few suggestions for small trees (20-35'tall):
Aristocrat pear (Pyrus calleryana 'Aristocrat'); Spring flowers; fall color
Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford'); Spring flowers; fall color
Crabapple (Malus sp.); Spring flowering tree; many varieties
Desert willow (Chilopsis linearis); Snapdragon-like flowers in summer; willow-like foliage
Eldarica pine (Pinus eldarica); Best pine for alkaline soils; Christmas tree-shaped
Honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa); Lacy spreading form
Panicled golden raintree (Koelreuteria paniculata); Showy flowers and seed pods
Large trees (above 35' tall):
Chinquapin oak (Quercus muhlenbergii); Round-topped tree; bold foliage
Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos); Thornless varieties available
Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioica); Upright tree; fine textured foliage
Live oak (Quercus virginiana); Evergreen shade tree

Hope one of these trees is just right!
