How close can I plant a 'Hakuro Nishiki' dappled willow to a septic system? Would a Coral Bark maple be a better choice. I am concerned about roots growing into the septic area. Thanks, Ann

Of the two, Coral Bark maple has better-behaved root systems than dappled willow. In general terms, root systems are typically concentrated in the top 18-24" of soil and will spread out nearly twice as far as the canopy or dripline of a tree or shrub. With that in mind, you can determine how far away to plant your new shrubs.
