The Q&A Archives: Preparing a garden in North Carolina

Question: We just moved to North Carolina, I realize that it is to late to plant a garden for this year, but can I prepare a garden and let it sit over winter, with newspaper and mulch?

Answer: Late summer is an excellent time to prepare your garden beds for spring planting. I'd dig or rototill the area, amend the soil by spreading 3-4" of organic mulch over the top of the bed and then dig or till it in to a depth of 8". Then cover it with newspaper and organic mulch to suppress weeds. In the spring, rototill again or hand dig the newspaper and organic mulch into the soil and plant. Best wishes with your new garden!
