The problem with common names is that they are not universal and can mean different things in different regions of the country. However, I think the plant you are describing is Clerodendrum trichotomum, or Harlequin Glorybower. This is based upon my extensive gardening experience in the Pacific Northwest. Harlequin Glorybower is a deciduous shrub or small tree. It has heart-shaped leaves. They are soft, hairy, dark green and branches grow in layers. The flowers are quite fragrant.
