Hydrangeas, as well as most other ornamental shrubs, should be fertilized only when actively growing--not to force them grow. Once growth begins in the spring, apply 1/4 pound of 12-6-6 or 8-8-8 as a top dressing around the base of the shrub. An annual application of compost is an alternative for providing nutrients to your hydrangea.
