| I want a recomendation for a new planting in front of my home. Area is shady and dry. 4hrs mid day sun. Plant will be about 6 foot from fondation. I would like something with year round interest grow no more that 15 ft. and evergreen or unique shape?? |
| This sounds like a rather difficult location to plant, between dry soil and the hot midday sun. In my experience, most shade loving plants will not be able to handle the intense midday hours of sun -- while most sun lovers would prefer a minimum of six hours of sun including the hour of noon. You might try a Taxus baccata or upright yew (evergreen) and leave it unclipped so it grows to its full height, or clip it to a shape you like. Your local professionally trained nursery staff and/or county extension may have other suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the growing conditions and your overall design goals. Whatever you plant, even if it is considered drought tolerant, expect to water it carefully for the first year or two while it becomes established. Good luck with your new plant! |
