The Q&A Archives: pruning blue prince and princess holly as hedge

Question: I planted blue prince and princess along my walkway,I want to know how and when I can prune it to grow as a hedge? They were planted a year ago and are about 2-3 inches high but growing wild. I what to shape them to grow like hedges? can this be done and how?

Answer: These can be pruned like hedges, however the best time to prune would be late winter. Then, remove any excessively long branches as they appear during the growing season. Do not prune after August first; the reason for this is a late pruning can stimulate late season growth which does not have time to harden off before winter.
