The Q&A Archives: Propagate fig tree

Question: I have a fig tree that I would like to take cuttings from. When is the best time to do this? What is the best method to propagate it, a cutting in sandy soil or air layering? The tree is full of fruit right now (mid August).

Answer: Debra,

The best time is late winter prior to the emergence of new leaves. You can do air layering now quite successfully. Put an air layer on a branch about a foot from the end and pull any fruit off of that particular branch.
