| We would like to plant a fast growing large tree (N. red Oak?)in front yard, to provide shade. This will be in a lawn area. we live in an area with many Pacific coast oak trees, some are 200+ years old. Do we need a large non grass area under this tree? |
| Northern red oak will grow in a lawn area, but as the tree grows it will eventually produce enough shade to starve the grass for sun and the grass will die out beneath it. It needs plenty of room to grow (hope you have a large front yard), but other than the above cautions, it should make a majestic addition to any landscape. |
