Hi, How should I prune my Amethyst Falls American Wisteria? I just planted it in June. I want to control where it grows. Do I prune the bottom or the top of the plant? Also, should I cover the roots in the winter with hay? Thanks, Karen Barry

You can snip and clip your Amethyst Falls throughout the summer to contain its size and direct its growth. Major pruning should be done in early spring to remove dead stems. I would pinch out the tips of the stems during the summer time; if any stems are non-productive, pruned them down to ground level in the early spring. To protect the roots, hay, straw or pine boughs can be used. Best wishes with your wisteria!
