I bought a eucalyptus tree and planted it several months ago. It is growing very nicely except for one problem. The trunk of the tree is smaller at the base than at the top. It is loaded with limbs and I'm sure it won't survive gowing this way. I hate to lose it - what can I do to encourage the trunk to strengthen at the base? |
Dolly, Check below the soil surface for something that is strangling the plant such as wire, twine, a plastic label or a root encircling the trunk. Remove whatever you find. If you find nothing there is little for you to do and the plant will develop normal trunk dimensions over time. I would avoid staking it tightly as the movement of the trunk in winds is part of what helps it develop a strong trunk. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
