Check below the soil surface for something that is strangling the plant such as wire, twine, a plastic label or a root encircling the trunk. Remove whatever you find. If you find nothing there is little for you to do and the plant will develop normal trunk dimensions over time. I would avoid staking it tightly as the movement of the trunk in winds is part of what helps it develop a strong trunk.
