| Should we do anything special to prepare two Vicary Golden Privet's for a Wisconsin winter? Do we trim these in the fall with our Spirea and Barberry? If so, how far? Are they supposed to keep their leaves and stay green/ yellow even in cold temperatures? Sorry to pester you, but these replaced two Pieris Forest Flames that didn't make it through last winter, so we just want to make sure we take good care of these! We're amazed by how much they grew in only one summer! Thanks so much! |
| Your golden privet will bloom in the spring so pruning immediately after flowering, and then lightly shearing throughout the summer season will result in an attractive and well groomed plant. Your plant will lose its leaves during the winter months but healthy new foliage will grow in the spring. Golden Privet is hardy to zone 5. Aside from mulching over the roots with hay, straw or pine boughs, you won't need to provide any special winter protection. In the spring, when new foliage emerges you can prune out any winter killed stems and branches and errant branches, then prune for shape. Best wishes with your landscape! |
