| Deborah, Your are seeing the fruiting structures of some type of decomposer fungi. There is a multitude of such fungi out there in nature turning organic matter into soil. Some produce mushrooms, some the "shelf type" structures you might see on a fallen log, and others the "puff ball" type structures that release the tiny blasts of spores that appeared as smoke.
