We own an inground pool. It gets sun most of the day. We want to put plants, shrubs, or what ever that will not drop leaves and make a mess. I don't want any thing that the bottom is flat on the ground that critters can hide under. Some where around 3'-4' in size or shorter. Would you please give me some ideas. Thank you, Susan |
In my experience most people prefer nonblooming plants, or plants that bloom early in the season before swimming season, so as to avoid attracting bees. You may also want to avoid deciduous plants that drop leaves into the pool in the fall. So, evergreens may be the best answer. You could look into junipers, arborvitae, or even large rhododendrons such as the R. catawbiense for example. Another option would be some larger deciduous shrubs with winter interest such as Aronia arbutifolia, Ilex verticillata, and the red twigged dogwood shrubs. Ornamental grasses are also a possible choice. All of these will do well in full sun. Your local professional nursery staff and/or local county extension may have additional suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of your planting site and your overall design goals. |
