should a blue butterfly bush be trimmed in the fall?

It is better not to trim butterfly bush in the fall. The late trim could encourage late season growth that would not harden before winter, thus making the bush more likely to suffer winter damage. Also, the branches provide some protection to the crown during the winter. In the spring, cut it back to about twelve inches tall or shorter if needed to remove all of the winter-killed wood.
