Soil preparation for a new lawn is the same whether you are seeding or sodding a lawn. In a nutshell, you'll want to dig or rototill the area to loosen the soil; rake out any debris including weeds; level the area (with a slight slope for good drainage), roll the area to flatten it out. You can incorporate topsoil (use a 3-way mix) after the initial tilling and raking. Then either broadcast seed or lay your sod. With sod, it's important that the roots make good contact with the soil.

Sod is generally available in spring and in fall at Home Depot stores. Helpful folks there can explain the soil preparation process and help you determine just how much sod to purchase.

Best wishes with your project!
