The Q&A Archives: Burford Holly

Question: How late in the fall can I plant small Burford Holly plants? How should I prepare the soil?

Answer: I'd get the holly in the ground by the middle of November so the roots will have a chance to settle in before winter. Roots will continue to grow as long as soil temperatures remain above about 40F. Hollies like soil that is slightly acidic. You can amend the planting bed (not just the planting hole) by spreading 4-5" of peat moss over the entire bed and then working it into the soil to a depth of about 10". This will help loosen the soil, allow it to drain well, and be nutrient rich. Best wishes with your new hollies!
