| Carrots need deep, loose, rock-free soil to grow to their potential. Dig the bed and add compost or aged manure to help loosen up heavy soil. Don't use fresh manure as it contains too much nitrogen and will produce poor-tasting carrots. Add some sandto help improve drainage in the bed. Then sow your seeds every 2-3 weeks so the carrots won't all mature at once. As the carrots grow, apply mulch to keep weeds down and prevent sunlight from reaching the crowns of the plants. Sunlight will cause thetops of the carrots to become green and bitter. |
