Answer: You will need to anchor them so they do not frost heave during the winter. In your area, you may be able to just dig a trench, layer in some sand or crushed gravel, set the bricks in on the diagonal, buried about two thirds of their length and leveled across the top, and mortar them together as you go. Your local county extension should be able to tell you if this will be sufficient or not. Otherwise, you could ask neighbor who has a brick edging that you like the look of and see how they did it. Depending on the size of the tree, you will possibly need to work around tree roots, the main roots should not be cut or damaged when you install the brick. Good luck with your project!
