| I'd recommend a mixture of satsuki and gumpo azaleas for the longest flower show. Some varieties of satsuki azalea like gunbi and wakaebisu are dense and low growing while other varieties may grow to be around 5 feet tall. In Japanese, satsuki means fifth month, and as their name indicates, these dwarf azaleas bloom from mid-May through June. Popular satsuki varieties include amaghash - deep red, eiten - mallow purple, gunbi - dwarf, white with red flecks, wakaebisu - dwarf, large pink flowers, and higasa - large rose pink flowers. Similar to satsuki azaleas, gumpos bloom much later than most other azaleas with a peak bloom time in June. Gumpos are compact, low-growing azaleas that make excellent landscape plants. The large flowers and compact size of these azaleas have made them a popular choice for the home landscape. Varieties include: gumpo - white blooms and pink gumpo - pale pink blooms.
