Answer: Using mothballs in the food garden is not recommended because of the chemicals they contain (they can taint your root vegetables). Mothballs are not registered for this type of use or as a rodent repellent. If mice are burrowing into the ground to snack on your veggies, lay some hardware cloth (1/4" squares) on the soil and then cover it with mulch material. The mice won't be able to dig through the hardware cloth. Use 24" squares and you can easily remove them to harvest your veggies, then replace them to keep the mice out.
