We noticed a tree at Landis homes in lancaster with thin leaves with hair spikes and acorns in a prickly bur cap. We wanted to know what kind of tree is it. The leaves are about 3-4 inches long

Unfortunately, based on your description I am not certain which oak you saw. There are literally hundreds of different oaks that grow in North America. The following web site shows some that should be fairly typical in your area, perhaps it is one of these.

Some with particularly spikey caps and bristled leaf tips would include sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima), turkey oak (Q.cerris), and to some extent Q.velutina, the black oak which is native in your area. Your local reference librarian might be able to help you identify it, or possibly your local professionally trained and certified nurseryman. Another possibility might be to contact the grounds manager and ask.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific for you but I hope this helps with your research.
