| Unfortunately, based on your description I am not certain which oak you saw. There are literally hundreds of different oaks that grow in North America. Some with particularly spikey caps and bristled leaf tips would include sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima), turkey oak (Q.cerris), and to some extent Q.velutina, the black oak which is native in your area. Your local reference librarian might be able to help you identify it, or possibly your local professionally trained and certified nurseryman.
