The Q&A Archives: Which Broom is the right Broom

Question: Would you recommend the all-Gold Broom above all others to plant along split rail fence for privacy. Have looked at several brooms but not sure of what we are looking at. Scotch, moonlight, etc. Need something to go along split rail for privacy from neighbors. Would you recommend this plant for here in Reno and do you have a picture of it?

Answer: There is a photo of Allgold Scotch broom (Cytisus x praecox 'Allgold') on Monrovia's website. Input the plant name in the search box and it will come up. For sorting out plants, it is better to use the Latin name, as common names vary and there are other genera (Genista) that also use 'broom.' As for a privacy plant, this is deciduous, meaning leaves drop when temperatures cool in the fall, so it would be bare in winter. Is that what you are seeking?
