I have been told that yews do not do well when planted in full sun with southwestern exposure. Is this true? Soil conditions are sandy loam with excellent drainage.2nd question is is there a better yew for this spot?

Yews grow equally well in full sun or part afternoon shade. As long as your yews are well hydrated, they should grow well in a southwestern exposure.
