There are a number of thornless roses available. I can't locate Old Smoothie for you, but here is a list of the most commonly found thornless roses:
Schoener?s Nutana ? deep pink flowers ? grows to 6 foot, good for poor soils - has a slight fragrance.

James Galway ? pink blooms - an English rose - grows to 5 foot - disease resistant ? has a pleasant fragrance.

John Clare ? deep crimson flowers ? grows to 3 foot ? has a delicate light fragrance.

Mme Legras de St Germain ? creamy white blooms ? grows to 6 foot ? wonderful scent.

Cardinal de Richelieu ? rich crimson purple -grows to 6 foot ? has a rich strong fragrance
