There's no practical way for a homeowner to stop the flowering of a cottonwood, except to grow just one male or just one female tree, with no other cottonwoods for miles around. Male trees shed large quantities of catkins and female trees shed cloudsof cottony seeds if male trees are present. It's the nature of cottonwoods.
