| I have a Golden Bamboo in a large pot doing very well in a north facing garden, this is it's first winter what precautions (preparations) should I take? Wrap plant? wrap pot? raise the pot a few inches up from the ground to stop freezing...I'd be very glad of your suggstions..Trevor |
| This plant, Phyllostachys aurea, is considered winter hardy to zone 7. Your zip code places you in zone 6, a zone colder, so you may have trouble overwintering it. Your bamboo will have the best chance of overwintering successfully iYou might try bringing it into a sheltered but cold location, such as a garage. Or, if you can keep it in a sheltered place with protection from the wind and insulate the roots to protect them from both cold and from freeze/thaw temperature swings,that might work. You could try heaping mulch around it, or possibly sink the pot in the ground and surround it with mulch. Wrapping with burlap might also help, although this would be very cumbersome. Either way, water if necessary to prevent the soil from drying out completely, it should be just barely damp. Be prepared for it to lose foliage due to the cold and grow new leaves next summer.
