| I PURCHASED 2 MONROVIA CORAL BARK MAPLES APPROX 2 YEARS AGO. ONE IS DOING FINE, THE OTHER HAS BRANCHES TURNING BLACK AND NOW THE TRUNK IS TURNING BLACK. IT HAD A SPLIT IN THE BARK OF THE TRUNK FROM THE BASE OF THE TREE APPROX 14 INCHES HIGH. ALSO, THERE WERE LITTLE ORANGE SPECKS ON IT I WAS ABLE TO SCRAPE OFF WITH MY FINGERNAIL-IS THIS SOME SORT OF DISEASE, CAN IT BE TREATED? |
| Unfortunately, based on your description, I think your tree may not make it. Any time there is a split at the base of the trunk it is a serious problem. These trees are grafted, so damage at the base of the tree is going to affect the graft as well as the circulatory system within the tree. The the orange specks were probably signs of an infection at the wound, and the blackened dieback is likely related to that as well. I would suggest you consult with your local county extension to see if there is any hope of saving the tree, however based on your description I don't think the prognosis is very good.
