Not all houseplants cause problems when grown outdoors. Surface roots are the nature of Scheffleras and they typically do not cause problems with other plants or with pipes. If you enjoy having the plant in your garden, don't yank it out. If you're tired of the plant and want a change, go ahead and remove it.

Best wishes with your garden!
