Early spring, just as new growth begins is the best time for pruning both maples and roses. If you prune now, it may promote new growth which will not be adequately hardend off before winter weather arrives. You'll end up pruning again in the spring to remove winter kill, so why not wait? March is a good time to begin pruning.

Best wishes with your garden!
