The Q&A Archives: Pruning my smoke tree

Question: I have a smoke tree that just about touches the ground from the weight of the upper branches. Can I prune the tree down to a smaller more compact size, more like a bush instead of a tree?
Thank you

Answer: Smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria) can be pruned down to about 5" above ground level to completely renew it, or you can simply prune it back to create or maintain a specific shape. Early spring is the best time to prune smoke trees.

Best wishes with your landscape!
