After the blooms fade, you can trim the plant back partway if you wish. It is better to leave at least six inches (or more) of stem on the plant, this helps protect the crown during the winter. Next spring, trim it off very short when the new growth begins to appear. This fall, mulch around but not over top of the plant with an organic mulch, apply it in a flat layer about four inches deep.
