Do I wrap fronds and/or trunk of pindo and med fan palms during extreme cold snap ( 20 degrees F)? How long can palms be wrapped? Days? Weeks? Unwrapped and rewrapped as needed? Should material be breathable e.g. : Burlap? Blanket? HELP! |
Karen, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Temps that cold are going to do significant damage to those species of palm trees. The key is to protect the top or terminal but at the end of the trunk and there is not a good way to protect it. Loss of fronds is pretty much inevitable if temperatures drop below 20 but the plant can grow new fronds if the trunk and terminal bud are not destroyed. For wrapping the trunk burlap is fine. It doesn't matter if the material breathes or not. You can leave the wraps on over winter but remove them after the danger of freezes is past. Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon! |
