Last year I left my glads in the ground and they developed small rice-sized pellets on the corms. Is this their normal reproduction? |
Yes, your glad corms developed little offshoots. If allowed to grow, they'll become new corms capable of developing new plants. Some gardeners toss away the old corms and replant the new ones. They need to be larger than rice pellets to support flowers, though, so try replanting them until they get to be a decent size. These little offshoots are sometimes carried away in the soil by rains and grow undetected for a couple of years. Then suddenly a new gladiolus will appear in a spot that's never been planted with them. A real mystery to some! Take good care of your new little corms and they'll flower eventually. |
