The Q&A Archives: cotinus coggygria royal purple

Question: even thought this plant reaches a mature height of 10'by 6',could i place them on the side of house as foundation shrubs keeping them at 4'x4'.

Answer: You could try this, however to control the size you will need to prune them back very short every spring (nearly to the ground) and may also need to do some trimming during the season so it would be a lot of extra work for you. This will cause them to grow larger than normal foliage and will prevent them from flowering, too. It can also stress them so they do not live all that long. It is a personal choice as to whether or not this would do. I hope this helps.
