Stachys can be trimmed back as needed whenever the foliage looks raggedy, but usually it needs a cleanup in early spring and again in mid and late summer. This is an unusual year in that the weather has been so mild. New growth will emerge from the crown in the spring. In the meantime, clear off fallen tree leaves to keep it from being smothered.
