I have a friend who has azaleas planted in a bed surrounding a pine tree that won't grow or put out many leaves. She has other small plants in the same bed that are growing with no problems. I understand that pine trees absorb a lot of moisture and nutrients from the soil. But I also remember that my grandmother had a yard full of pines with healthy 4'-6' azaleas planted around each one. Why is my friend having such bad luck with hers? |
Leasa, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Azaleas should grow fine beneath pines. It may be due to dry soil, pot bound roots from the original planting container or other such root related things. If they still are not responding after another season of watering properly and some periodic fertilizing (with a product for acid loving plants such as Miracid) they may need to be replaced with healthier more vigorous plants. Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon! |
