The Q&A Archives: Tree Pruning

Question: My 4 year old Jacaranda tree has two top branches that badly need pruning. We are in the middle of a true cold spell for California - mid 30s to 40s at night and hig 50s to 60s during the day. Will I harm the tree if I prune the branches now? Should I wait til it warms up?

Answer: Pruning encourages new growth which will not be cold hardy. Wait until early spring, just as new growth begins, to prune your jacaranda. New growth will appear within a few weeks of pruning. Enjoy our beautiful tree!
