| I purchased a 5-gallon Monrovia Valencia Orange tree yesterday that I thought was a dwarf but the tag that came attached to the tree indicated that it can grow up to 25 feet tall with up to a 20 foot spread. Can I grow this tree in a container in my home? If so, how often will I have to transplant it? Is it eventually going to die because it won't be able to grow to it's full potential or can I successfully grow this tree in my house? I have space for a tree that could grow rather tall - maybe 14 feet tall or so, but I don't know if I can even find a pot big enough to put it in if it were to get that big. I live in Missouri where a Citrus tree will not survive outdoors in the winter. Any suggestions would be helpful... |
| It is possible to prune your full sized tree to keep it within bounds. You can top it when it reaches 12' and maintain it at that height with annual pruning. You can also prune off one-third of the length of the branches to keep them within bounds. Pruning in this way will slightly reduce the amount of fruit your orange tree produces, but shouldn't harm the tree in any way. Repotting should be done as often as required, as indicated by roots escaping from the drainage holes in the pot and surface roots showing up above the soil level in the top of the pot.
