I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you.
There are many shrubs that will do well in your area. I suggest you look at what is growing around neighborhoods in your area that you like or don't like the look of. Then consider a visit to the Dallas Botanical Garden to see what all they have on display. Such a shrub bed is a long term investment in the home and you want something to be easy care but also that ends up being aesthetically pleasing to you over the years.
In general keep in mind that whenever dwarf forms are available for a particular shrub species they are often the best way to go as they minimize the trimming tasks in order to prevent the shrub from overgrowing. If you come up with some shrub ideas feel free to revisit our website to post another question and we'll be happy to comment on any pro's or con's of the particular type of shrub. Also take time to works several inches of compost into the soil in the planting bed to loosen that hard black clay soil and make the new shrubs better able to establish quickly.
Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon!
