The Q&A Archives: Rooting from cuttings

Question: It's end of February, beginning of March.....would now be a good time to cut some twigs from my forsythia shrub and put some rooting powder on it?.....

Answer: Forsythia roots so easily that it might be worth trying now, but generally you would wait until about May or so when the shrub is fully leafed out and has been growing for a bit and take softwood cuttings. Softwood cuttings are hard enough to snap in your fingers but not so hard that they are woody. If you use very soft tender new growth tips they tend to rot before they can root.
