My fiance just purchased our first home, and it's time to get our yard ready for spring! Problem is, we don't know where to begin! Our grass is ok, a little brown, but we've got dandelions everywhere! I've sprayed them over and over, but what can we do to get the grass green and the dandelions gone?

It does take persistence to combat dandelions. Attack when they are weak, which means weeding with a vengeance whenever you see them emerging, removing as much of the root as possible. If the weeds have already gone to seed, mow and remove the clippings to prevent reseeding. A healthy lawn is a deterrent to dandelions because they prefer thin turf. Also, mowing with the blade set high will allow the grass to shade the low-growing weeds and slow the germination of weed seeds. To achieve a thick, lush lawn, put your turf on a regular feeding and watering schedule; fertilize in April, June, September and November (check your local garden center for specials on fertilizers - they typically go on sale at just the right time for application in your growing region).

Best wishes with your new home and your new landscape!
