We recently installed a standby generator at our Jupiter Florida home and I am required to hide it from view. We planted Ficus bushes at first and then I was told that the roots would soon tear up the sidewalk they were planted by as well as the plastic gutter drain pipe and hose bib water line that ran under them. we have removed the Ficus and are trying to determine the best bushes to replace them. The bushes would be on the east side of the house and shaded from the afternoon sun. They would need to be about 5 feet tall and would be planted next to the curved sidewalk running from the driveway to the front door. A friend recommended Eugenia bushes or Cherry Laurel as bushes that did not have a very aggressive root system. We plan on providing edging around the bushes parallel to the sidewalk with weed block cloth and white stone on top. I was also thinking about hooking up a soaker hose around the bushes for easy watering. Would it be better to put the hose on top of the rock or bury it underneath it and/or the weed block. Thanks for your help.

David,

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you.

Those plants would be fine. Regarding the irrigation location either is fine. If you leave it on top of the cloth and among the rocks you can see if it is working and make any repairs such as knowing when you have clogged pores in the hose much easier. If buried it is probably better aesthetically.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening year in 2007. Please stop in again soon!
